Chapters 1 and 2

Discussion questions:

The Kansas prairie is described as gray all around, as far as you can see. What words would you use to describe the prairie?

Dorothy fell asleep when she was in the cyclone. Have you ever been in a big storm? How did you feel about it?

Dorothy feels bad that her house fell on the Witch of the East. How would you feel if your house landed on a Wicked Witch?

Dorothy finds out she must travel to the Emerald City alone with only Toto. Would you begin the long journey to get home or would you want to stay with the Munchkins?

Discussion questions:

Dorothy has to begin her journey with just her basket, silver shoes, and Toto. What things would you bring with you on a long journey?

Dorothy sees how beautiful the land she has arrived in is but she still wants to go back to Kansas. Would you rather live here or somewhere beautiful and far away?

The scarecrow is only afraid of one thing in the entire world. What things are you afraid of?

Chapters 5 and 6

Discussion questions:

The Tin Woodman thinks a heart is the most important thing a person could have and the Scarecrow thinks brains is the most important thing a person could have. Dorothy doesn’t know which one is right. What do you think?

Dorothy stands up to the Lion to save Toto. Would you face your fears to save a dog like Toto?

The Lion wants to ask the Wizard of Oz for courage. Do you think you need more courage? Why or why not?

The Scarecrow figures out the Tin Woodman needs oiled. Do you think the Scarecrow is smart even without brains?

The Lion has to make a great leap over the ditch to continue on the journey. What time have you had to take a big chance to keep going?

The Tin Woodman builds a raft to cross the river. Have you ever been on a raft or a boat? What was it like?

The Scarecrow says he will return a favor to the Stork for rescuing him from the river. Have you ever done something nice for someone in return when they helped you?

The Poppy field was big trouble for our friends. What are your favorite kinds of flowers?

The Emerald City is very different from Kansas. Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Would you be able to destroy a Wicked Witch if a Wizard asked you to?
